Whose side are they on?
I used to think that partisan politics was a bad thing. The Democrats in the Senate have now changed my mind. The latest FISA disaster has me yearning for the days when Democrats were Democrats.
The President has proved again and again that he sees the Constitution as just a piece of paper ("The 4th Amendment? Who gives a shit about that?"). But giving immunity to the phone companies who broke the law by turning over their customers phone numbers and information is just disgusting. I rank it as the second most impeachable act, behind lying to start a war. Why does he want to grant immunity to the phone companies? It obviously not to protect them. No, they obviously are trying to cover something up. Senator Jay Rockefeller, a supposed Democrat from West Virginia (figures) has been perhaps the most eager one to pass this bill. Why? He gets campaign cash from AT&T and Verizon. So he says that the phone companies need immunity because they had to turn over the numbers to Bush and were being patriotic Americans. Yet he also says that if they are not granted immunity, then they will not be willing to keep cooperating with the government and allow them to illegally spy on us without a warrant. Which one is it? You can't have it both ways. By the way, why does someone with the last name of Rockefeller need to take money from phone companies? He's a friggin' ROCKEFELLER for Christ's sake.
Harry "Turncoat" Reid is so eager to get this bill passed for Bush that he is going to actually make Chris Dodd and others (hopefull Feingold, Brown, etc.) filibuster out in the open. Not like the silent filibuster Republicans, who have already broken the record for filibusters since the 110th Congress opened. I hope to God that the remaining true Democrats get out a phonebook or War and Peace and filibuster.
Remind me again why Chris Dodd dropped out of the presidential race? So far, he has been the only one to show some balls and stand up to the Republican minority. Obama and Clinton will be in Washington on Monday, and they are going to have to vote on cloture. If they vote for it, I will find it very hard to vote for them in either the primary of the general election. And why are hardly any Democrats taking action? Whose side are they on?
Why are people not outraged over this? In case you didn't know, they started spying on us BEFORE 9/11. So they can't say they are doing this to listen in on calls from al-Qaeda.
I leave you with two simple questions: Has the government has been spying on you? How do you know for sure?

Is spying in and of itself a bad action, or is it the potential reactions to what they might find?

Not sure what you are asking. Are you trying to justify the fact that the government is spying on you? Because that certainly is a bad action.
